Kenbay electric bikes to help the elderly
Kenbay bikes, based in Dublin have just released a new range of electric bicycles ideal for the elderly in Ireland. Coming with both a low step frame and a traditional crossbar style, they are perfect for carrying one passenger and come with a rear carrier for storing small objects. The Kenbay ‘Wilde’ and ‘Swift’ electric bicycles can be ridden manually and used as a standard bike, but they also have an electric motor and battery pack to assist your pedalling when tackling those steep hills or going long distances. In pedal assist mode, the bike uses electricity to drive the front wheel to help the rider pedal and assists them on flat roads and inclines alike. For anyone with mobility, hip or knee problems they can be an amazing way to get around without putting too much strain on the rider. This means the ability to get a bit of exercise and independence will not be affected by health issues, opening up a whole new world of freedom to many people. The new LiFePO4 battery, which cost about 12c to charge, can bring the rider up to 70kms in one go meaning pretty much any bicycle journey can be done by pretty much anyone. That includes many of the small journeys people do in cars. Going to the shops and back, visiting the grandkids; this can all be done with Kenbays range of bikes. Some families even find themselves replacing the second car with one. Doing short journeys on the bike and long journeys in the primary car is a great way to save on petrol, insurance and road tax. According to the AA, an average family car can cost up to €6500 a year to run. When you consider all the expenses associated with it (depreciation, fuel, insurance etc.), it’s no surprise. Electric bikes have become quite popular in Europe and Asia and in 2010 the 1 million bike sales barrier was broken for the first time. This signals a change towards a more eco friendly, cost effective way of getting around and many Senior Times readers could benefit from joining in. And with RTEs ‘Today with Pat Kenny’ and Drivetime programmes as well as Today FM all featuring Kenbay in their programming, it looks as if this global trend is reaching Ireland and this is as great thing. The more electric bikes are on the road, the fewer cars are on the road and this has a knock on effect in terms of congestion, pollution, accidents and maybe most importantly..public health. So, if you need to get out and about but can’t justify paying ever increasing petrol prices, or if you just don’t want to huff and puff up hills, Kenbay could provide the ideal Christmas present.
