SKIN CARE FOR THE OLDER WOMAN

Senior Times

Mairead Robinson on caring for your skin as the years go by.
With all the advance in modern cosmetics, we can see that there is no reason why most of us cannot look as good with a skin care regime using the correct products.
With the harsh salty winds that affect our Irish faces, moisturising the skin is vitally important at every age once you past childhood. As we get older, the need to hydrate and moisturise the skin becomes ever more important. Choosing the right moisturiser is vital. And as the skin absorbs the creams while we are asleep, a good rich night cream can prove to be a girl’s best friend.
So, as we prepare to say “Night Night”, we should make sure our skin is ready for a little night-time pampering. First of all it is important to cleanse the face, for even if you don’t wear make up, there is still going to be grime from the day on the surface of the skin. If you use a serum, and we highlighted some really good ones in the last issue, this is the time to apply it gently to the face, using upward strokes. Then choose a good rich moisturiser, one that is designed for mature skin. Check out what is available in your local chemists – there are some really luxurious products available these days, so don’t rely on something that you have been using for the past twenty years, or something your own mother swore by!
Ensure that the product is designed for your skin type. I love the richness of L’Oreal Age Perfect Reinforcing Rich Night Cream. It will not break the bank and is designed to tackle those age-spots and skin sagging.   You should use it every night on the face and neck, avoiding the eye area and you will love its rich creamy texture.
Simple also do a lovely Anti-Wrinkle Night Cream in their Repair range which is designed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. They have a whole range including a really good Repair Day Cream and some lovely eye cream. What is lovely about this range is that is so gentle on even the most sensitive skin as they don’t use any chemicals, colours or perfumes. They also have a Regeneration Age resisting Night Cream which while it fights premature aging, it is also quite luxurious for more mature skins and the beauty is that it can be used around the eye area too as it is so gentle.
Widely available, and very popular with Irish people is the No. 7 skin care range from Boots Chemists. They do a great range of Protect and Perfect skin care range which includes a luxurious night cream labelled Protect & Perfect Intense Night Cream. As with the other products mentioned here, a lot of research has gone into the efficacy of the ingredients used. It also very affordable, coming in around the €25 mark. Check your local Boots for stocks.
Next issue we will be looking at eye care – it is very important to protect the delicate skin around the eye area. As we all know, it is the skin around the eyes that usually gives our age away! Treat it gently; it is like tissue paper, whereas skin on other parts of the body is like cardboard!
So take a little time before you go to bed to treat yourself to some deep moisturizing. And remember, your smile is the cheapest, safest and most effective facelift!
